I didn't finish the next assignment, a green cactus with budding red flowers. For some reason, it was a slog and left me uninspired. I couldn't find much enthusiasm for it. Of course, there was stuff to learn from it because that's how the course is built and it turned out that I didn't quite have the tools at first to do the next drawing - a happy looking dog. But I think I caught up anyway.
The colored pencil class is coming to an end. Next week is the last one. There have been three assignments since the "cowboy" drawing. The first one was an African elephant scene with very little detail. I didn't really get into it very much but I did learn one of the first lessons of coloured pencil drawing - the idea of layering "local colour". That is, objects in a drawing, or the whole drawing in itself, will often consist of a main colour (the local colour) that is enhanced by value - shadows and light areas - created by darker or lighter variations of the local colour. So the elephant drawing was done with only three colours, dark and light umbers and cream. This is a pretty awful reproduction but it gives an idea of what I mean.
