Now this drawing was enormous fun although I was kind of stymied about how to begin. Each drawing we do in Suzanne's class spans two weeks and I missed the first one because I was sick. But I managed to go and pick up the reference photo from her a few days later and went home to try it out on my own - and realized that I had no clue. None - except that I knew darn well that black and gray pencils are absolutely verboten in this class. How to make black fur then? How do you make "colourful" blacks, as Suzanne says? Good question. So I kind of farted around with the eyes and the white areas and sheepishly went back to class for the instruction. And the answer is? The magic of layering! I had no idea that if you start with light blues, add some dark reds and purples, a little bit of dark green and then some indigo, then stand back from this carnival of colour, it will read as, you guessed it, black. I've always been way too lazy to bother about learning colour theory. But it seems, there's a whole lot more to it than I ever suspected. Wheee! This is fun!
